I worked with the geriatric community for quite a few years at a local elders home. Back then we called it the nursing home mostly because the majority of the residents were immobile and needed a great deal of care. Things have changed a great deal since that time. Now you see the majority up and as active as possible thanks to mobility equipment and staff that encourage the usage of it.
One of the hard aspects of having a paralyzing neurological incident is the inability to do those simple things that was done without even thinking about doing them. Walking, talking, and often times just sitting up without falling over now seems impossible. Missing out on activities or even the simple art of conversation with fellow mates can make the strongest willed person depressed. The cure naturally is to keep the activity level as normal as possible and mingling with other residents. This is where I found the Geri chair to be one of the most useful pieces of mobility equipment on the market.
The Geri chair is much like a recliner, but on wheels. It can be easily moved from one room to the next, with the person sitting in it. The chance of tipping out is second to none because there is a tray that fits right over the chair and acts like a safety stop. The trays are fantastic for placing your food tray upon, but work out great for simple activities too. Puzzles, games, cards, arts and crafts etc. When it's time to kick back and take a snooze, most of the chairs tips back just like a recliner. The Geri chair is a common mobility item in almost all convalescent care centers and elder care homes. The ability to mingle with others to visit, watch a movie or some other activity is positive therapy for anyone. If you know of anyone who is unable to join in to daily activities in their home due to instability on their feet, this is a great way to stay in the middle of things. Many of the chairs look good and with the ease of movement can be pushed about very quickly. The Geri chair is definitely on the list of great mobility equipment. Below are a couple examples of a Geri chair, but you can also find them at any of the other links provided at this site.
