Portable Commodes

I think probably one of the worst things my husband went through after his stroke was knowing he probably couldn't make it to the bathroom when the urge struck.  We resolved it by setting up a portable commode right in the bedroom.

I know some will say, "Yuck", but believe me, it is one of the best devices made for recovering patients.  Less accidents, less embarrassment for the patient and there are now additives to cut down on any unwanted odors from them.  I personally had carpet in the bedroom, so purchased an inexpensive vinyl desk floor mat to put it on.  The grippers on the bottom of the mat kept the mat from slipping and it could be washed daily.  Those mats are heavy duty enough to lay nice and flat.

Most of the commodes are portable.  They fold up and can be taken on trips or outings.  Heck, my hubby liked fishing, so we even took it on the boat!  Anyone with binoculars would have thought we were nuts, but it worked out just fine and a love for fishing goes on yet today.

Commodes best suited for most are those that have the ability for the legs to be lowered or raised according to what is the preferred height of the user.  This type is excellent for anyone who has had knee or hip replacement.  Make sure the commode also has arms to help push the user up or act as a safety device.
